KOCH SIGNS DISTRIBUTION DEAL WITH
LEGENDARY R&B LABEL BRUNSWICK RECORDS
Port
Washington, NY – August 16, 2005- KOCH Entertainment
Distribution is pleased to announce that it has signed an exclusive
North American distribution deal with legendary R&B label Brunswick
Records. Under this agreement, KOCH will distribute the entire Brunswick
Records catalog including releases from the company’s associated
labels M2K Music & Media and Spy Communications.
Between
the mid 60’s and the mid 70’s, Brunswick Records
was one of America’s leading R&B record companies. From
its studio office on Michigan Avenue, Brunswick employed some of
Chicago’s very best writers, producers and musicians to create
a large portion of what was being played on R&B radio during
that period. If you listen to any classic soul station in America,
you are bound to hear several of their recordings every day.
Beginning
with Jackie Wilson’s first hit, “Reet Petite,” in
1957, Brunswick introduced numerous hits to the R&B and Pop charts
for nearly 20 years, by artists such as Tyrone Davis, Barbara Acklin,
Young-Holt Unlimited and The Chi-Lites. The label also featured releases
by Gene Chandler (of “Duke Of Earl” fame), Erma Franklin
(The Queen Of Soul’s sister), Little Richard, T-Bone Walker,
and many more.
By the
time Brunswick stopped producing new product in 1982, the company
had racked up more than 150 Billboard charted singles. Even today,
Brunswick recordings are extremely popular with old and, more importantly,
younger soul music fans around the world. In addition to appearing
continuously in films and on television, the music has been reincarnated
through sampling by artists such as Jay-Z, Joss Stone, Fantasia
and Jaheim, to name only a few. In fact, the 2003 smash “Crazy In Love” by Beyonce was created by sampling
the hook of the recording “Are You My Woman” by the Chi-Lites.
Although
the label is known more to record collectors & music
industry insiders, who are aware that many of the musicians behind
huge hits for Motown performed on numerous Brunswick recordings as
well, the label plans to raise awareness of the depth and quality
of Brunswick recordings to the average music fan.
Over the next 36 months, Brunswick’s goal is to repackage
a great deal of material in double CD anthologies, box sets and
an assortment of compilations. This fall, the company will be launching
a Brunswick website, which will have a detailed history of the label
as well as a complete catalog of all the recordings.
“Choosing a national distributor is a very serious decision
for any record company to make,” commented Paul Tarnopol, President
of Brunswick Records. “The two things that sold us on KOCH,
was KOCH’s very professional reputation, as well as our respect
for KOCH's Dave Nives, who has been pushing us towards KOCH for a
long time.”
“We’re truly excited to be working with one of the greatest
R&B labels of all time and to reintroduce this timeless catalog
at retail,” says Michael Rosenberg, President of KOCH Entertainment
Distribution. “Brunswick Record’s classic catalog, with
its legendary roster of artists, will be a smash hit at retail and
with music fans of all ages.”
On October 18th, M2K Music & Media will be releasing a 2-CD compilation
entitled "NIKKI MUSIC VOL. 02." This collection will feature
the world's top Chill and House DJs and will be supported by each
of the eleven NIKKI BEACH clubs around the world.
The first releases on Brunswick (OCTOBER 18th) will be the label’s
first 2-CD collection on Tyrone Davis ever released in the United
States and Canada, which will include ten Top Ten R&B recordings,
and a 20-song collection from Young-Holt Unlimited. Each collection
has been digitally remastered from the original master recordings.
Brunswick will follow up with 2-CD collections on THE CHI-LITES and
JACKIE WILSON after the first of the year. Brunswick is also preparing
to release a 2-CD collection consisting of 40 of their Top 40 R&B
singles from 1966 to 1975.
On October 4th, Spy Communications will be releasing four classic
albums on CD for the first time by Dionne Warwick, King Curtis and
Candi Stanton. These selections from the Warner catalog are part
of its "AMBASSADOR SOUL CLASSICS" series. The best-selling
Spy CD is currently BOOTY JAMS, which has sold nearly 200,000 units
to date. Spy video will be re-soliciting the DVD, "ULTIMATE
PRO WRESTLING TRAINING Vol. 1, 2 and 3”.
